While you might think that creating the perfect poster board is simple, it can actually be a lot more complex than you think, and considering the impact a poster board can have on those viewing it, it’s worth doing everything to try and get it right.

Step One

The text

It’s essential to use a simple font that can easily be read from about 3 feet away, meaning that the type size should be around ½ and inch in height. Title texts should be a little bigger, around an inch in height, and it’s a good idea to print a test page out so that you can measure it, hang it up, and check how easy it is to read from a short distance away.

Jargon, acronyms, or anything that can’t easily be understood, is best avoided, and many professional poster board designers will use keywords for search engine optimization, in the same way as digital marketers do.

It’s also important to make good use of contrast, with darker text on a lighter background, for example, or vice versa. Prointing it out and viewing it from 3 feet away will help you determine whether you’ve achieved the right level of contrast.

Use text sparingly, avoid the use of too many colours, and most importantly, ensure that everything can be easily read with no confusion, blurring, or irrelevance.

Step Two

The graphics

Pictures, as the expression goes, are worth a thousand words, so wherever possible, use images, charts and graphics to convey your message, with your poster board layout being made up of around 50% graphics.

Images must be self-explanatory and easily recognizable, and if you’re using charts and illustrations, try to make sure that these are as simple and bold as possible. You may need to provide captions for some images, and separating each one with sufficient white space or bold barriers is important for avoiding confusion or a lack of clarity.

When it comes to colours, with 7% of the population blind to both red and green, try to avoid these as much as possible, and to group similar ideas, background colours can be used. Contrast should be used to ensure that everything is kept crisp and that there is a clear distinction between colours used in the background, and those used in the foreground.

Avoid colours that are vibrant or glossy, as these may shift focus away from your messages, or make the poster harder to read.

Step Three

The layout

Poster boards are best read from top to bottom, left to right, as this is the format most people find easy to read. The flow of information on the board must be logical and simple to follow, while graphics and text are balanced in accordance with everything else.

Important points are best positioned at eye level, below the title, while other supporting details should appear lower down. Begin by drafting your poster board layout and placing it on the floor or sticking it to a wall so that you can give it the final once over, and check for any mistakes, inconsistencies or things that don’t quite look right.
